Silly Little Girl and The Funny Old Tree
Concept Statement
This play is decades old. This is my rendition of the silly little girl and the funny old tree; in the eyes of a youth of a future generation. Unlike Huo Paukun, going against the tradition of change, our current society accepts it because rather than seeing it as a disappearance of culture and youth, we see it as assimilation where everyone adapts and picks up different cultures and traditions, making everyone live in harmony and color. The lost is where everything started, when someone is lost, they look for others and rely on others. But the girl has traditional thinking, hence, stuck inside a box. She sees only black and white, refusing to see the possibility of other colors. And she meets a tree, also stuck in the conforms of their traditional thinking. However, they are in a different situation, one is trapped and the other refuses to go out.
Change and Evolution have brought so much convenience in our lives, I want this play to somehow tell the ideas of Huo Pau Kun, with the things that he had thought was not a good thing; the advancements of our technology. The play would be using projection mapping and the manipulation of lights in props.
It's a non-conventional set. Which makes it flexible for the story and also shows that the story can be applied throughout any time and it is up to the audience to interpret it. The plan here is to have the audience think for themselves and ask the question, how does this apply to me? and what the whole story really implying?
The acting space of the tree is the whole platform, also known as the sundial walking round and round trapped by traditional ideas. "old" is a metaphor of their thoughts.
The girl wears really old clothing, just like her thought and thinking. Black and white because she refuses to see the other colors out there. She feels sad she lost the tree because there is no one else to stand with her ideas. but she is still young, she is naive, she has yet to open up to the world.
the girl actually represents vulnerable thoughts and ideals, that is fleeting. it has the chance to escape and be renewed but she refuses to.
We realize that everyone is wearing colours except the little girl, who all has gone through change and was tainted with different colours, which then create a beautiful world.
